Preventive Care for Your Pet in Damansara Perdana
At Mel’s Vet Care, we believe prevention is always better than cure.
Regular check-ups, timely vaccinations and parasite control can help your cat or dog stay healthy, avoid painful diseases, and enjoy a longer, happier life with you.
Our preventive care plans are tailored to each pet – based on age, lifestyle, and any existing health issues – so we can catch problems early and support your pet at every stage of life.
What Is Preventive Care?
Preventive care is all the routine healthcare your pet receives before they become sick.
It usually includes:
- Regular health check-ups
- Core and elective vaccinations
- Parasite prevention (fleas, ticks, worms, heartworm)
- Basic dental and weight checks
- Screening tests where needed (blood tests, urine tests, imaging)
Instead of waiting for obvious symptoms, we monitor your pet over time and look for early, subtle changes that might need attention.
Why Preventive Care Matters
Even indoor cats and mainly-indoor dogs can be exposed to infectious diseases and parasites. Some conditions:
- Do not show obvious signs at the beginning
- Can spread to other pets at home
- In some cases, can even affect humans (zoonotic diseases)
With regular preventive care, we can help to:
- Reduce the risk of serious, preventable diseases
- Detect issues such as dental disease, obesity, kidney or liver problems earlier
- Plan appropriate vaccinations and parasite protection for your pet’s lifestyle
- Guide you on nutrition, behaviour and environmental needs
Our aim is not just to treat illness, but to protect your pet’s long-term wellbeing.
What We Include in Preventive Care
Routine Health Check-Ups
We recommend regular wellness visits, even when your pet seems healthy.
During these visits, our veterinarian will usually:
- Take a detailed history (behaviour, appetite, environment, any changes)
- Perform a full physical examination
- Check weight and body condition
- Listen to the heart and lungs
- Examine eyes, ears, skin and coat
- Assess teeth and gums for dental disease
If we notice anything concerning, we will discuss further tests or follow-up plans with you.
Vaccinations for Cats and Dogs
Vaccinations remain a key part of preventive care. We follow evidence-based vaccination guidelines and adjust the plan according to:
- Age (kitten/puppy, adult, senior)
- Indoor vs outdoor lifestyle
- Travel plans and boarding needs
- Previous vaccination history and health status
Some examples of diseases that can be prevented with vaccines (depending on species and risk):
- Dogs: parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, rabies
- Cats: panleukopenia, calicivirus, herpesvirus, rabies (where required)
Our vet will review your pet’s vaccination record and advise on the most appropriate schedule. We do not recommend a “one size fits all” plan.
For specific vaccine timing or if you are unsure of your pet’s vaccination status, please contact us so our vet can advise you individually.
Parasite Prevention (Fleas, Ticks, Worms, Heartworm)
Parasites can cause discomfort, anaemia, skin problems and, in some cases, life-threatening disease.
We can advise you on safe and suitable options for:
- Flea and tick control
- Intestinal worm prevention (roundworm, hookworm, tapeworm, etc.)
- Heartworm prevention for dogs (and at-risk cats, where applicable)
We will consider your pet’s lifestyle, environment and travel habits before recommending any product. We do not encourage self-medication without veterinary guidance, as some products may not be suitable for every animal.
Dental & Weight Checks
Dental disease and obesity are two of the most common, and most overlooked, problems in pets.
During preventive visits we will:
- Examine the teeth and gums for tartar, gingivitis and broken teeth
- Check your pet’s weight and body condition score
- Discuss diet, treats and feeding routines
- Recommend when a professional dental procedure or diet change might be needed
We do not provide home dental procedure instructions, but we are happy to advise you on safe brushing techniques and suitable dental care products for your pet.
Screening Tests & Senior Pet Care
As pets age, we may recommend additional tests to monitor internal organ function, such as:
- Blood tests
- Urine tests
- Blood pressure checks
- Imaging (X-ray or ultrasound) when indicated
These tests help us to detect early changes in the kidneys, liver, thyroid, joints and other systems, often before your pet shows obvious symptoms.
For senior pets, we may suggest more frequent check-ups and a customised plan to support mobility, comfort, nutrition and quality of life.
How Often Should My Pet Have Preventive Check-Ups?
As a general guide (this is not a substitute for a personalised veterinary plan):
- Kittens & Puppies: more frequent visits for vaccines, deworming and growth monitoring
- Adult Pets: at least once a year for a full health check and booster vaccines if needed
- Senior Pets: often every 6 months for closer monitoring and early detection of age-related disease
Our vet will tailor the schedule to your pet’s condition and discuss any adjustments with you.
What You Can Do at Home
You play an important role in your pet’s preventive care. Helpful things you can do include:
- Monitoring changes in appetite, thirst, urination, stool and behaviour
- Keeping track of any weight changes
- Using parasite prevention as prescribed by your vet
- Providing appropriate diet, enrichment and a safe environment
- Bringing your pet to the clinic promptly if you notice anything unusual
We do not encourage home treatment of illness without examination. If you are worried about your pet, please contact us for advice or an appointment.
